Yogic Pranayama Explanation

Most yoga is based around the principle of pranayama, which stands for “restraint of the breath.” It is meant to allow you to relieve tension and keep the energy of your body healthy and in proper alignment. A lot of relaxation techniques use this principle of “control of life force,” and it can often be a great alternative to getting medical treatment.

When a woman gives birth rather than be given drugs, which can harm the infant, a form of controlled breathing is taught. This system of breath control, referred to as Lamaze, requires the patient to inhale deeply, hold for a count of 3, then exhale slowly while focusing on an object. What women find is that not only do they have less pain, but they also have easier births as the muscles relax which allows the baby to emerge more easily.

When used in conjunction with relaxation techniques, such as yoga, it allows the mind and body to connect bringing about greater awareness and an increased ability to tap into portions of the brain not used during normal daily routines. Since the body and mind are independent entities, teaching them to work together for the betterment of the being as a whole is important.

Pranayama allows you to relax both your body and your mind, getting you closer to enlightenment as you practice yoga. With these techniques, it’s easy to achieve harmony and improve your concentration, but you have to be careful when practicing more advanced techniques. However, you can get to where you need to be quite quickly with the appropriate training. While breathing is an automated action our bodies perform, it has the biggest potential to affect our general wellbeing. Breathing brings oxygen to the brain and into our bloodstream, and it also turns food and other nutrients that we absorb into fuel. Breathing also has a great impact on our state of mind; we can get overly anxious and tense if we breathe too much and we become more relaxed and calm when we breathe just right. Each exhalation, in fact, actually detoxifies our bodies of harmful carbon dioxide that can poison our systems and cause impaired judgment.

In conjunction with meditation or yoga the right form of Pranayama can calm the mind and make the body receptive to treatments. Most importantly, during the day when stress, anxiety, and frustration become overwhelming simply using these breathing techniques can help one regain control and get on with their day in a productive way. As the primary source of life, breathing should no longer be taken for granted and techniques should be utilized to ensure one maximizes the benefits that come with proper control.
