‘Try’ is a very weak word. Just ask any coach or personal trainer. They’ll both tell you that you won’t get very far by just trying. You have to commit. Without a totally committed level of thinking, it becomes very difficult to be successful. The same goes for quitting smoking.
Even though you are looking to convince yourself or someone else that you truly desire to quit, by saying ‘try’, you are conditioning your subconscious beliefs for potential failure.
Need an example? How about this. My wife has a fear of roller coasters and I don’t know where it came from. She’s not afraid of heights and not really afraid of speed, so why this is, I still haven’t figured it out. And the funny thing is she can’t tell me why either.
In any case, there have been occasions when my son and I have been able to convince her to stand in line with us and have got her to say ‘I’ll try.’ But here’s the thing; every time we get near the loading lane, she bails out and decides to wait for us at the end instead.
So what gives her a way out? The word ‘try’ of course. Trying isn’t like promising or really committing to something. It’s more like a convenience. And saying you’ll try isn’t going to work when quitting smoking because whether you realize it or not, you’ve probably set yourself up for failure because now you’ve allowed yourself a way out.
Track down all the smokers you know who have attempted to quit and I think you’ll be surprised to find that most of them will say that they ‘tried’. And not only that if you ask if they have further plans to quit, you’ll hear ‘Oh sure, I’ll try again.’
So let’s try a different approach. Develop a policy such as this for your quit smoking efforts. ‘I will quit no matter what. I believe I have the fortitude to achieve my goal. Nothing will stop me from reaching it.’ Make a powerful statement like that to yourself and believe it and your success is guaranteed.
Write your commitment down – everywhere. Carry it in your purse or wallet; your coat pocket; in your car; your bathroom or anywhere else you will see it to remind yourself the reasons why you want to quit smoking. Refer to these commitments often – it will make your efforts that much more solid.
