Law enforcement and insurance companies use a hair follicle drug test in order to see what a person has done in the past. Their previous drug use is recorded in the shafts of the hair for the past 90 days and can let the people wanting the test results to see the occurrence and type of drug used. This is typically done by a company, but some of the reliable tests can be found for home use.

Testing for drugs in the hair follicles is different from urine or blood tests because small amounts of the drug used, gets trapped within the hair follicle and hair strand. With blood and urine, it can be flushed from the body within a shorter time frame. These drugs are carried through the bloodstream.

The blood stream carries the drugs to the hair follicle of the subject; it does not have to be on the head. Even after the drug leaves the body and does not show up in the blood or urine, the imprints on the hair shaft gives a better view of what kind of lifestyle the subject has been living.

Some of the drugs that are tested for are the ones that the government has deemed illegal. Some of the most popular tests check for drugs such as opiates and marijuana. Many prescription pills show up in the blood, urine, and hair and in order to be legal, the person should be able to account for the use of the drugs, such as a doctor’s note or prescription bottle.

When a person does any type of drug, it is carried to the hair follicles by the bloodstream. It then gets trapped in the hair shaft, leaving an imprint that reveals the drug has been used. If the subject being tested for drugs has no hair on their head, it can be taken from any other part of their body. Arm and leg hair is often the best choice if head hair is not used, but it is not limited to just there.

Hardcore street drugs that often leave the body within a few days of using them are sometimes hard to detect when using most drug tests. The hair follicle test will allow these drugs to very easily be seen in the shafts of the hair. Marijuana, however, does not show up very easily in the hair test, so many times companies and law enforcement will use the urine test if the drug is suspected.

The hair test gives proper readings when a few directions are followed. One of the most important things to remember about a hair test is that there needs to be a proper amount taken from the person getting the test. There should be at least 40 milligrams of hair for the sample and it should be at least one and a half inches long. This sample is usually taken from the crown of the head.

Hair follicle drug testing is also available to a parent or a spouse for the early detection of drug use. The reason that the home kit is utilized as much a parent or spouse, is for the simple reason that the test can be done discreetly. This will benefit both parties if the results show that there is no drug use. Accusations can do more harm than good in these cases.
