The Truth About Bad Cholesterol




Cholesterol gets so much bad press that it’s hard to believe that your body actually needs it. There are two kinds of cholesterol in your body, good cholesterol also known as HDL cholesterol, and bad cholesterol or LDL cholesterol. Cholesterol in your body is necessary to make hormones, vitamin D and bile salts.

Just as the name suggests the bad cholesterol causes complications in our body. What happens is the LDL cholesterol or the bad cholesterol tends to deposit the cholesterol on the walls of the artery, thereby creating a substance called plague. This plague narrows the arteries and blocks them which give rise to heart attack by blocking the blood on the way to the heart.

What Raises Cholesterol?

As we go about searching for remedies to control bad cholesterol, we are perplexed by the various terms that we have to face; one such is the dietary cholesterol. A common knowledge is dietary cholesterol are bad. But on the contrary dietary cholesterol has the ability to control the blood cholesterol and does not allow it to arise. The dreadful ones are the saturated fats and the trans fatty acid.

For solving problems related to cholesterol one has to reduce their bad cholesterol levels and for achieving this apart from abstaining themselves from eating foods like dairy, meat, seafood and eggs one can also eat foods which will reduce the LDL levels.

Packaged foods usually have Trans fatty acids. The main culprits are popcorn that is microwave, margarine hard sticks and French fries from some fast foods. By cutting down these foods or taking alternative substitutes that are better for the health one can cut down on the Trans fatty acids which contributes to the cholesterol that is bad for health.

How good are good fats

By bringing down the level of bad cholesterol one can bring a considerable increase in the level of good cholesterol. Good cholesterol takes out the excess cholesterol to liver which excretes it out of the body. Hence it is essential to have an increased level of good cholesterol in the body which will help to reduce the risk of diseases related to the heart.

One more way of reducing bad cholesterol is to consume food which have abundant source of soluble fiber and polyunsaturated fats as well as monounsaturated fats. The good cholesterol will definitely increase with this change in eating habits.

You can also increase the amount of physical activity in your daily life to decrease cholesterol levels. Limiting alcohol intake to one glass a day for women and two a day for men is also a good idea.

Getting to learn more cholesterol information is vital for improving your food habits. Maintaining a proper cholesterol levels is a necessity to have happy life.
