More often than not, a person’s daily routine, work or play can be hindered by chronic back pain. There are literally hundreds of thousands of people around the world who suffer from this type of pain on a daily basis.
To be considered chronic pain, it has to last at least three months. This discomfort can be a shooting pain that tends to go up and down the spine. Sometimes it will affect the hips and knees. The reason for this is because the patient will adjust their walk and the way they sit to accommodate the back pain. This is usually done during the day, when the patient has to work or go to school.
Lower back pain is probably the most common back pains among Americans. There are many different things to consider when trying to pin point the cause. The patient’s age, weight and lifestyle can often play a role in the daily pain. When one sees the doctor about the condition, the doctor may ask about the family’s history of back pain. Tests will be performed and x rays may be taken to try to locate the problem. These tests will often help the doctor decide the treatment and medication that should be used to relieve some, if not all, of the pain. MRI’s and CAT scans are often helpful tools when assessing the patient’s condition.
In many cases, there is an underlying medical problem that will cause patients to have pain that is localized in the back area. A pinched nerve will not only cause pain in the back, it will also cause weakness and pain in the legs. There should be tests performed to indicate if a pinched nerve is what is causing the problem.
Another reason for back pain can be a pinched nerve. This will often cause the legs and hips of the patient to have shooting pain or numbness. A doctor’s help is often needed to control the pain and repair the pinched nerve.
A viral infection can often cause the inflammation of the spinal cord. This will cause pressure when the cord is pushed against the vertebrae. Many times the cord will bulge between the back bones, causing severe pain. When this is the case, immediate medical attention is required.
A popular reason for women to have back pain is the size of their breasts. Many times women will suffer for many years before getting any type of relief. If the pain can not be controlled with treatments such as medication, surgery may be an option. This surgery will reduce the size of the breasts, giving the patient a lesser load to carry. With therapy and medications, the patient will usually fully recover from both the surgery and the back pain.
