Simvastatin Tinnitus: The Shocking Link
Originally launched by the multinational Merck/Schering Plough in January, 2008 to treat cholesterol related cardiac problems either singularly or in association with Ezetimibe, Simvastatin has dangerous side effects. It is pronounced as sim-va-stat-in. In the United States, Zocor is the brand name of the drug. The administration of this drug reduces the risk of stroke, sudden heart attack or death resulting from coronary heart diseases. This is because this drug lowers the ‘bad’ cholesterols and triglycerides, and increases ‘good’ cholesterol or high-density lipoprotein. It also clears up blocked arteries, reduces chest pain caused by angina pectoris. But the negative side effects include the following – increased transaminases, constipation, dyspepsia, CPK elevation when it comes to skeletal problem and neuromuscular and also pain in the abdomen (less than 1%), nausea, vertigo, diarrhea, dizziness, fatigue, thrombocytopenia, weakness, headache and pruritus.
The FDA’s Test Results connecting Simvastatin & Tinnitus
Negative public opinion all over the US compelled the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to communicate relevant information about the initial results of the effect of a combination high dose of Simvastatin and Ezetimibe vs. Simvastatin singularly on the Atherosclerotic Process in all those people who had Heterozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia. 720 people were selected for the double-blind, randomized test that spanned 2 years. Patients were exposed to Ezetimibe 10 mg/Simavastanin 80 mg and Simavastanin (Zocor) singularly. The key endpoint of the test involved the mean change in Carotid Intima-media Thickness (CIMT), which represents a surrogate endpoint, which is supposed to render a substantial reduction in the potential cardiovascular eventualities in the near future.
As an imaging experiment, it was not meant for clinical upshots, i.e. stroke, MI, etc. it was found out that Ezetimibe and Simvastatin used together reduced LDL cholesterol more efficiently than when Simvastatin was used on its own. However, both medications hardly changed the CIMT. The after effects were similar in both cases, too.
Persistent buzzing in the ears (a sure sign of tinnitus), dizziness, fatigue, and other problems as well, were being reported from all over the US as serious after effects of Simvastatin. Normal results were yielded when varied tests as blood count and ECG were run. Within 3 months of discontinuing Simavastanin, a particular patient was cured of the after effects. Off course, the patient did it against the wishes of the doctors.
The effects of Simvastatin can be delayed, as the following case history will show. A 52 year old male was diagnosed with T2 Diabetes and was advised by the attending physician to take Simavastanin 20 mg per day. After six months, the patient suddenly developed tinnitus along with vertigo and other related distressing symptoms. Loss of concentration resulted in his inability to drive. Immediate memory loss made his family life distressful, as he could not recall conversations with his wife. After running a series of tests like Blood test, ECG and even MRI, the root cause was still unknown as all tests yielded normal results. But the moment Simavastanin was substituted by some other drug, almost magically the tinnitus disappeared.
A 62 year old lady went to an ENT Specialist when she had ringing tone in both her ears. She had earlier been diagnosed with high level of cholesterol and occasional angina pain in the chest. Conventional medication prescribed Simvastatin 20 mg/day, which she started using, immediately causing the side effects. She was diagnosed with tinnitus in both the ears.
It is now proven by the above illustrations that using Simavastanin causes tinnitus, though the time taken for this side effect to surface can vary. Other more serious side effects are common, too.
Finding the Right Treatment – Simvastatin & Tinnitus
Simvastatin and other such conventional medicines prescribed by the medics treat just the symptoms and not he root causes of the problem. And precisely because of this, they are never able to cure the disease – all they do is simply stall it for some time. And on top of that, they all come with serious side effects. Patients of tinnitus are advised to turn to holistic remedies which treat the body as a whole and single out the root causes that cause the symptoms. The identification and treatment of the root causes cure the symptoms as well. This can be achieved only by holistic remedies and that is why they have become so successful.
