When was the last time you looked behind your home entertainment center? Do you know what any of those cables back there are for? Every component has multiple cables, power cables, input cables, output cables, speaker cables, coaxial cables, HDMI cables; it often looks like one big tangled mess. It is a wonder that anything is connected correctly. If you do not understand what each cable is for, it may be impossible for you to add or replace any of your components.
If you want to make sense of it all, the first thing you need to do is figure out what all of these cables are connected to, and what the purpose of each of these devices is. At the very least you will have a set top box and a TV, which today is probably an HDTV. If you have an HDTV then you ideally you will have an HDMI cable to connect your set top box to your HDTV. Using an HDMI cable is the only way to receive a true high definition picture on your HDTV.
If you have a Blu-ray player than this will also require an HDMI cable, to connect to your HDTV and your surround sound system. Again, without an HDMI cable you will not be experiencing a true high definition picture or sound, which is the whole point of purchasing all of the high definition components. If you are not using HDMI cables you should check your set top box, HDTV, surround sound system and Blu-ray player to see if the components are HDMI compatible, in order to determine how many HDMI cables you need. Replacing your old audio/video component cables with HDMI cables is a great way to start making sense of all of those cables.
Most have between two and four slots built in. Two is fine if you are only going to run two high definition sources through the television, but for anything more than that you will be stuck with a lower quality sound and picture. DVD players are not considered high definition, but you can get a pretty close replication of HD using quality component cables.
A surround sound system means you have a whole other set of cables that you need to make sense of. The only way to get the best sound possible from your surround sound system is to make sure that each speaker is connected to the proper input slot, otherwise nothing will sound correct. If you want to experience high definition sound you should also consider connecting your surround sound system to your other components with HDMI cables. The cables behind your entertainment system may look like a big mess, but if you understand their purpose, and make sure they are connected properly, you can enjoy a great home theater experience.
