The temporomandibular joint is a complex bone formation in the base of the skull that aids in the opening and closing of the mouth in order to eat, drink, masticate, chew and helps in providing energy to body and even helps in smiling and even in speaking. Unfortunately, it can also become a house of problems and complications like pain in the jaw joint, pain in the ear, numbness in the arms and fingers, if it stops functioning properly. These TMJ symptoms are discussed in detail in this article.

The TMJ dysfunction symptoms are so varied and numerous that for ease and convenience we are listing them under three different heads – Primary Symptoms, Secondary Symptoms and Unusual Symptoms. All these symptoms can be visible on various parts of the body including arms and fingers. In this article we will take good look at all of them as these symptoms originating in the jaw can appear on many body parts.

Primary Symptoms Of The TMJ Disorder

* Jaw-joint ache
* Swelling of the jaw joint with tenderness experience in the surrounding muscles, tendons and the bones.
* Continuous and severe headache and pain in the ear
* A popping sound heard every time opening or closing the jaw
* Stiff jaw joints
* A stuffiness experienced in the sinus
* Pain and soreness in the facial muscles
* Hearing loss

Secondary Symptoms

* Hazy visions, light sensitivity, compromised night visions. Pressured feeling behind the eye balls, regular oozing of water from the eyes.
* Migraines and headaches that mimic sinus headaches and cluster headaches. Tenderness felt in the scalp and pain felt through the hair roots.
* Roaring, hissing, buzzing sounds in the ear as in the case of Tinnitus. A feeling of stuffy ears and gradual hearing loss.
* Pain in the jaw and hindered jaw movement.
* Berserk tongue movement and pain felt in the chin, cheek and mouth.
* Aching shoulder blades and neck muscles.

* Numb fingers and arms that happen mainly due to the uneven bite. It puts undue stress on the muscles linked to the jaw, neck, shoulder and face and which makes them go into temporary spasms. This further put strain on the nerves in the hands and fingers and leads to the tingling or numb feeling.

Unusual Symptoms Of TMJ

* Inflammation of the cheek is an atypical symptom of the TMJ syndrome. This becomes more apparent on the side of the affected area. Inflammation of the affected jaw joint is a common feature but it rarely spreads to the cheek or other surrounding areas.

* Regular dislocation of the jaw without any pain or any related discomfort. An afflicted person has to sleep with a hard pillow pressed against the affected joint as it is prone to get dislocated while the person is in sleep. It generally happens in the chronic cases of misaligned jaws devoid of any treatment for a long period. It can be solved with the help of neuromuscular dentists.
* Although it is a common feature that the clicking sound of the jaw can be heard by someone standing a feet or two away from the affected person, but in rare cases this pain can be heard almost five feet away. It is also followed with severe oppressive pain just after the sound.
* Shoulder pain is an uncommon feature of TMJ syndrome. But some people complain of this rare symptom. The pain is generally felt on one side where the pain extends from the sore neck muscles to the shoulders.

While describing unusual symptoms it becomes important to point out that these symptoms can also be caused by other ailments. Take the instance of aching facial muscles, there can be almost hundred reasons responsible for it that are least connected with TMJ. The reasons can be as varied as boils, trauma to the facial muscles, nasal ailments, glaucoma, eye related problems etc. So, a correct diagnosis of the case becomes a very important feature before any treatment can be attempted.

TMJ Cure

Since so many people are suffering from this problem, the treatment of this disorder has become very important. However, unfortunately most modes of treatments fail to provide a permanent solution for TMJ syndrome. Among the various treatment options available there are conventional modes of treatments consisting of drugs and surgeries, over the counter options like mouth guards and splints, home TMJ remedies and exercises, but all of them only provide a transitory relief, since they only address the symptoms and simply overlook the actual cause.

However holistic remedies ignore the symptoms and reaches deep within the body and identifies the root cause of the problem. And once the root cause is identified holistic remedies eliminates the root-cause permanently, thus removing all associated symptoms in the process. And once the root cause is gone neither the symptoms not the actual problem is able to afflict the person again. Hence the person gets the rid of the TMJ dysfunction forever and for good.
