When endometriosis pain is so severe that other treatments fail, hysterectomy is performed as a last chance to cure this disease. Endometriosis is a disease that is caused by the growth of the uterine lining or endometrial stroma outside the uterus. Severe endometriosis pain is experienced when the uterine lining can be found on other parts of the reproductive system. These can include the fallopian tubes, the pelvic sidewall, the ovaries, the uterosacral ligaments, the Pouch of Douglas, the rectal-vaginal septum, or the cul-de-sac.

Hysterectomy is performed when all other forms of treatment fail to cure severe endometriosis pain. Hysterectomy involves the removal of the uterus and possibly the other reproductive organs as well. Depending on the patient’s condition, the fallopian tubes, the ovaries, or the cervix may also be removed,

There are basically four kinds of hysterectomy procedures that can be performed to treat endometriosis pain. A subtotal hysterectomy is when only the uterus is removed, and a total hysterectomy s when the cervix is removed along with the uterus.

The other two kinds of hysterectomy are the bilateral salphingo-oophorectmy and the bilateral oophorectomy. Although both these kinds of hysterectomy procedures involve the removal of the uterus and the cervix, the former also involves the removal of both the fallopian tubes and the ovaries, while the latter involves the removal of only the ovaries. The removal of the ovaries in the treatment of endometriosis pain prevents the re-growth of endometriosis after the uterus has been removed since endometriosis feeds off on the estrogen produced by the ovaries.

The incision for a hysterectomy is performed either on the vagina or the abdomen. A laparoscope may be used with a vaginal hysterectomy, but with or without this instrument, a vaginal hysterectomy would require shorter recovery periods and hospital stays.

While it may be logical to reason that the removal of the diseased organ will lead to a cure, it may not always be true. In the case of endometriosis pain, only the removal of the ovaries can increase the chances for a long term cure. However, even this may not be effective, especially if the endometriosis has already gone out of the uterus and into the other organs.

A woman begins menopause, if she isn’t in the menopause stage yet, and becomes unable to bear children after a hysterectomy. The woman may also undergo a hormone replacement therapy in order to replace the estrogen that was produced by the removed ovaries. However, it should be kept in mind that estrogen fosters the growth of endometriosis, which can make the disease recur.
