Tips for Preventing Heartburn While Pregnant

Heartburn is a commonly experienced ailment for many women throughout pregnancy. Among the causes of this is the elevated hormonal levels that are a result of being pregnant. This leads to softening of the ligaments that are responsible for monitoring the passageway that leads from the stomach to the esophagus. Therefore, gastric acid is able to make its way up the esophagus and throat more easily. One other contributor to heartburn throughout pregnancy is the added pressure that the growing baby puts on the stomach region. Often that can trigger the stomach acids to ascend to the esophagus.

There are plenty of choices in terms of alleviating the suffering of heartburn throughout pregnancy. Following are some strategies that should provide some relief.

* Keep your head elevated at least six to eight inches while sleeping. You might find a specially made acid reflux wedge pillow to be helpful in these situations. This will assist gravity to keep the acids in your stomach from traveling up the esophagus.

* Steer clear of alcohol. It is dangerous to your child and is also a factor in heartburn.

* Stay away from foods that are known to produce heartburn. This means chocolate, spicy foods, citrus, tomato based foods, in addition to fatty and fried foods.

* Don’t bend from the waist; use your knees instead. This puts less pressure on your stomach.

* Don’t slouch when sitting. Sit straight up in a comfy chair.

* Don’t wear tight fitting clothes. Constriction around the waist and stomach will trigger heartburn.

* Do not go to sleep for at least three hours after a meal. You’re less likely to suffer from nighttime heartburn.

* Drink plenty of water, at least 8 to 10 glasses each day. However do not drink too much while you are eating. This leads to overexpansion of the abdomen, thereby forcing out the gastric acids in your stomach.

* Don’t eat too quickly.

* Consume smaller portions of food. Having a few small meals during the day will keep the pressure off your stomach.

* Keep weight gain to healthy levels. Too much extra weight puts more stress on your stomach.

* Stop smoking. This isn’t just bad for the baby, it’s a frequent trigger for heartburn.

* Stay away from caffeinated beverages such as coffee, tea, and soda.
